Great News for Manufacturers... IPC- J-STD-001B Training Now Available in Australia

Mr Ken Gatvin has just completed the IPC-J-STD-0018 Instructor and Training Program at the Manufacturing Technology Training Centre in California.Ken is an internationally experienced Technical Instructor who in addition to his teaching duties as Head of Electronic Manufacturing at Canberra Institute of Technology is available to industry for operatorinstruction. He is already a NASA Certified Instructor and we understand he is the first and only person in Australia to have completed the J-STD-001B program. During his stay at the MTTC Ken also successfully completed the IPC-A-610B Class 'A' Instructor and Certification Program and we were advised that his examination results in both theory and practical for both courses were exceptional with a perfect score for the J-STD-0018 exam.

Ken has reported that the J-STD-0018 program.i focussed on process control and management of system outputs.

SMCBA Members will have the opportunity for personnel undertake operator training to IPC-J-STD-001B in courses to be conducted by Ken for the SMCBA in 1998. Places in the courses will be limited so if you are interested please contact the SMCBA as soon as possible - you can indicate your interest by completing the fax oack information request on page 3.

IPC-A-610B:
As we indicated above, Ken Galvin is able to provide operator training and certification to IPC-A-610B as are some other SMCBA members: Terry Clitheroe provides a variety of training and is the only person in Australia to have been designated as a Master Instructor to MIL-STD-2000 by the EMPF (USA). For defence personnel, Ray Blair at HMAS Nowra has achieved Class 'A' Instructor Certification to IPC-A-6108.

SMTA Books of the Month:

"High-Mix, Low-Volume Manufacturing"
by Michael Afahoney
Integrating ideas from many sources, "High-Mix, Low-Volume Manufacturing' re-examines manufacturing fundamentals in a way often overlooked by corporate strategists. It is a comprehensive, practical and detailed educational reference covering 'global' concepts through 'tacitical' ideas in a clear and concise manner. This book covers the entire spectrum of manufacturing-related topics from competitive strategies through performance measurements. Although its focus is on high-mix, low-volume manufacturing there is valuable information concerning other types of manufacturing. The goal of this book is to develop the manufacturing core competencies required to obtain a competitive advantage. Available to SMCBA members for $135 including postage 8 handling.

"Surface Mount Technology:Terms and Concepts"
by Phil Zarrow and Debra Kopp
As SMT continues to evolve, new packages, processes, techniques and equipment result in new terms and acronyms. This book is a comprehensive glossary, defining more than 1,000 terms and concepts encountered by engineers and managers engaged in process, manufacturing, quality, design and purchasing. Available to SMCBA Members for $75 including postage and handling, contact the SMCBA Office.

Papers from the Journal of Surface Mount Technology:
As part of our affiliation agreement with the SMTA, SMCBA members are able to request articles from the Journal produced by the SMTA. Following are the articles in the October 199? issue of the Journal.
